Artificial Intelligence: Impact on physicians

Here’s an interesting perspective of executives on impact of AI/machine learning (ML) on physicians. (No annotations here). (I apologize for no download link either- someone had sent it to me).

There are two interesting takeaways from here:

The survey results are unclear about the impact. However, I have no idea how the “impact” was measured.
This one is also very instructive. Will there be “job losses”? No idea.

I think, broadly, the impact on profession depends on the algorithm and how robust it is to account for “outliers” and “failures”. AI/ML is a compelling idea. Form filling can be automated but it would make the lower level administrative jobs redundant and won’t be ethically or politically palatable. Workflow processes require improvement to minimize wait times, for example, or onboarding of individuals.

I strongly believe that most hospitals would inevitably move towards hybrid solutions and incorporate mix of personnel and technology. It would be difficult to measure performance outcomes since algorithms/administrators will continue to have biases (and hence forming the basis for several more “studies”).
