5G roll out in India

India’s 5G roll out among fastest in the world: Vaishnaw, Telecom News, ET Telecom

India’s 5G rollout is among the fastest in the world. And within a short timeframe of six months, we have 115,000 sites radiating 5G signal. The 5G testbed at IIT Madras is helping us perfect telecom gear and software. India is now emerging as an exporter of telecom equipment and technology,” said Vaishnaw. “After successful field testing, we have started deployment. Within a few months, this deployment will be at more than 100,000 sites,” he said.

I haven’t seen much in terms of OPEN RAN here, but this is good news. I personally don’t have a 5G network, but any city with the primary infrastructure in place and some signals is being declared as “5G-Ready”. It will take significant time to push through the wider availability of 5G. Arguably, there is huge capex involved in the backhaul, even though India has made massive strides in improving the fibre layout.

There’s no “killer application” for 5G, and migration to 5G capable handsets will take a lot of time. I don’t see potential applications for the 5G ecosystem play out in the immediate future, but will require a large time period to mature.
