I don’t endorse this, but this one is a new kid on the block.
Instagram’s co-founders launch Artifact, a kind of TikTok for text – The Verge
The simplest way to understand Artifact is as a kind of TikTok for text, though you might also call it Google Reader reborn as a mobile app or maybe even a surprise attack on Twitter. The app opens to a feed of popular articles chosen from a curated list of publishers ranging from leading news organizations like The New York Times to small-scale blogs about niche topics. Tap on articles that interest you, and Artifact will serve you similar posts and stories in the future, just as watching videos on TikTok’s For You page tunes its algorithm over time.
The biggest success of any application in the social media space is when they refer to the “TikTok” type of recommendation engine. It is true they nailed something on the head. A short video format in a continuous scroll and showing something of the same thing. I tried it at various intervals (especially after the 2009-10 time period) when the Internet access became cheaper. However, none of them could replicate the “success”; partly because there was no specific business model and partly because computing models were still “primitive” by today’s “standards”.
The duo pushing these ideas around the TikTok style of news delivery isn’t anything new. It has been tried, tested and done with. There’s nothing extraordinary about a recommendation engine. Think laterally and out of the box though-Can this be used in oncology?
I brainstormed several ideas in this space and naturally, I failed. Therefore, I know what doesn’t work.
I watch this space closely.
